Choosing the right flooring: solid or engineered hardwood
Solid hardwood is one piece of wood from top to bottom, usually 3/4 inch thick, and it can be sanded and refinished many times over its life. Engineered hardwood is a real wood top layer bonded to a stable plywood core.
That core moves less with humidity, which matters in the Upstate, where a damp July and a dry January can open and close gaps in a solid floor.
Our guidance is simple. Solid hardwood suits main-floor living rooms, bedrooms and stairs where you want the floor to outlast the house. Engineered hardwood suits slabs, basements and homes where humidity swings are hard to control.
Either way, we guide you to the right match for your subfloor and rooms, not to a sales target. Our knowledgeable staff will help you weigh how each one fits your home and lifestyle.
Both kinds, in stock. No six-week wait on a special order from a store before your flooring project can start.
White oak and red oak favorites. The species that take stain evenly and hide daily wear best.
A straight answer on which to buy. Find the right wood in one visit instead of three showrooms.

How we install new floors so they stay flat and quiet
Wood is a natural material, and most hardwood problems come from moisture, not from the boards. Before installation we meter the subfloor and the flooring, let the wood acclimate to your home, and fix squeaks and soft spots while the floor is open, with the right tools for each subfloor.
Solid hardwood is nailed down over wood subfloors, and engineered hardwood can be glued, nailed or floated depending on what is underneath.
Every step follows the same process: a free in-home estimate, a written quote, delivery and acclimation, removal of the old floor, subfloor prep, installation, stair nosing, quarter round and transitions that create clean, built-in edges, then a full cleanup. Our installation services cover the whole job, not just the boards.
Moisture tested before the first nail. The check that prevents cupping and gaps a season later.
Stairs, trim and transitions included. The details that make a new floor look built in, not laid down.
Licensed, insured and accountable. If anything is damaged during the job, we repair it.

Hardwood refinishing services for the floors you already own
If your wood is worn, scratched or an outdated color, or you have found original oak under old carpet, you may not need new flooring at all. Refinishing sands the old coating off, lets you pick a new stain, and seals the floor with fresh protective coats.
It usually costs far less than replacement, and solid hardwood can be refinished several times. Many of our customers are surprised how much a refinish changes a room, and as a family business, our goal is to recommend the fix that makes sense, not the biggest job.
A new color without new wood. Go from dated orange oak to a modern natural or dark stain.
Scratches and gray spots sanded out. Years of wear removed in a few days.
Refinish or replace, decided honestly. Our flooring services include telling you when sanding will not fix it.

Wood flooring options for your next project
Hardwood gives you more choices than any other floor, and each one changes the look and the quote:
- Construction. Solid for main floors you may refinish again and again, engineered for slabs, basements and humid rooms.
- Species. White oak and red oak for even staining, hickory for bold grain, maple for a clean, light look and walnut for rich brown color.
- Plank width. Classic 3 to 4 inch strips, or wide planks of 5 inches and up that make open floor plans feel larger.
- Finish. Prefinished boards with modern finish technologies, in natural, stained and matte looks that arrive ready to walk on.
- Refinishing. If your floors are sound, sanding and a new finish may be all you need.
Prices vary with the species, width, grade and finish you choose, so we give you an accurate written quote after measuring.

Hardwood flooring questions
What are the three grades of hardwood flooring?
Most mills sell three broad grades. Select is the most uniform, with few knots. Number 1 common shows natural knots and color variation. Number 2 common, often sold as rustic, has the most character. The grade changes the look far more than the durability.
How long does a hardwood flooring project take?
Wood needs a few days to acclimate after delivery. Installation of 500 to 1,000 square feet then takes most crews two to four days, and refinishing takes three to five days including drying time between coats.
Should I choose hardwood or luxury vinyl plank?
Choose hardwood for living rooms, bedrooms and formal spaces where warmth and resale value matter, and because it can be refinished. Choose luxury vinyl plank for kitchens, baths, basements and homes with big dogs, because it is waterproof and harder to scratch.
What is the rule of 3 in flooring?
It is a design guideline: use no more than three different flooring types or colors in one home, so rooms flow together instead of looking patched. Hardwood in living areas, tile or LVP in wet rooms, and laminate in bedrooms is a common combination.
Is it better to glue down or float engineered hardwood?
Glue-down feels most like solid wood and is our usual choice on concrete. Floating is faster and works over many existing floors but can sound hollower. We recommend the method based on your subfloor.
What is the best wood flooring for the money?
Oak. White oak and red oak are hard, stain evenly, and are widely available, which keeps the price reasonable. Exotic species look striking but cost more and can be harder to refinish.
