How Laminate Flooring Is Constructed

Laminate flooring is made from multiple layered materials fused together for strength and stability. The top layer provides scratch resistance and stain protection, while the core layer adds durability and impact resistance.

Modern laminate flooring uses advanced imaging technology to create realistic wood textures and patterns, making it difficult to tell the difference between laminate and traditional hardwood — at a fraction of the cost.

Key Benefits of Laminate Flooring

Reason 1.

Affordable Wood-Look Flooring

Enjoy the appearance of hardwood floors without the high price tag, making laminate a smart option for budget-conscious upgrades.

Reason 2.

Durable & Scratch-Resistant

Designed to handle daily wear, laminate flooring resists scratches, dents, and fading in high-traffic areas.

Reason 3.

Low Maintenance & Easy Care

Laminate floors are easy to clean and maintain, requiring no sanding, staining, or refinishing.

Laminate Vs Vinyl Flooring

The key difference between vinyl and laminate flooring is in their materials. Laminate flooring is made from several laminated layers, including a wood fiberboard core. Vinyl flooring—also made from several layers—is entirely synthetic.

How Vinyl Flooring Is Constructed

The base layer of standard sheet vinyl and tiles is fiberglass coated in PVC and a plasticizer. The sheet is then printed and embossed with a surface print layer. Multiple wear layers are applied, and a layer of no-wax polyurethane is applied on top.

With vinyl plank flooring, the core is a thicker, multi-layer PVC. Luxury vinyl flooring comes in planks or tiles that interlock side-to-side to form a floating floor. The thickness of vinyl flooring ranges from 1.5 mm for sheet vinyl to 5 mm for luxury vinyl planks.

The main disadvantages of vinyl plank flooring are that it can look inexpensive, scratches easily, and is less durable than hardwood or tile.

How Laminate Flooring Is Constructed

Laminate flooring, which comes in plank style, looks similar to LVP. The critical difference is that its core is made from wood byproducts bonded with resins. The top surface is a hard, transparent plastic wear layer over the printed design layer, with an overall thickness ranging from 6 mm to 12 mm.

As with plank vinyl, a built-in underlayment is an option—an increasingly popular choice among DIYers.

Laminate is the best flooring option for appearance, as it can mimic hand-scraped hardwood, stone, ceramics, and other materials more realistically than vinyl.
